Coating rods are used primarily in production processes and in laboratory settings. Used to apply a variety of coatings or emulsions to a multitude of substrates, rod construction is as diverse as their uses. RDS manufacturers a vast array of standard coating rods and can work with you to create custom products for your specific needs. We also offer convenient accessories for both production and lab settings. Production Stock Our production rods are designed to provide precise coatings for the paper converting industry. RDS rods are made of type 416, 303 or 316 stainless steel that is ground and polished to tight tolerances. Carbon steel rods are also available. Most rods are furnished with round ends so they can be coupled to the drive mechanism using a three jaw chuck. However, we can supply rods with slotted, flattened, keyed, or other types of ends to suit your coupling requirements. RDS also offers a QuickCoupler device for quick, tool free rod changes. Smooth Stainless Steel Rods Commonly used to meter clay coatings to paper, paperboard and plastic films. Stainless steel rods are available in stock from 3/16 to 1 inch in diameter. Chrome plating of stainless steel rods provides additional endurance and superior performance. Wire Wound Rods Wire wound rods are a stainless steel rod wrapped very tightly with stainless steel wire, and are used to apply even, wet film coatings on various surfaces. Wire wound rods are available in various wire sizes, diameters and lengths up to 12 feet. Gapped Coating Rods For heavier viscous coatings, gapped wire wound rods prevent plugging and greatly reduce or eliminate rod marks, which are more common with thicker coatings. Gapped rods are available in various wire sizes, diameters and lengths up to 144 inches. Formed Rods A formed rod (or threaded rod) is machined from a solid steel rod and closely resembles the threads of a screw. Providing extremely precise metered coatings on film, tin, rubber, boards, plastics, glass, textiles and more, formed rods are available in standard sizes up to .75 inches in diameter and up to 40 feet in length.
